PLAN YOUR GRASS WITH CONFIDENCE

2m or 4m artificial grass rolls — sizes, cuts and cost

For a narrow space, a 2m artificial grass roll can reduce the amount you buy. A 4m roll can cover a wider lawn in one piece. The best choice depends on your measured shape, trimming allowance and planned pile direction. You pay for the full rectangular cut, including material trimmed away.

What does cut to size mean?

Choose an available roll width and enter a length on the product page. A 4m-wide cut ordered at 5.1m long supplies 20.4m². It is supplied as that rectangle for you to trim to your lawn shape. A price per square metre is an area price, so one metre of length from a 4m roll contains 4m² of grass.

Newport 30mm, Carisbrooke 40mm and Ventnor 50mm currently offer 2m and 4m widths. For a 3m-wide garden, compare a wider single cut with a joined layout. Check the live product options before ordering and ask us about any specific cut requirement.

Which cut fits a strip around 1m wide?

If you’re shopping for 1m wide artificial grass, check both measurements before choosing a roll. On our product pages the width is fixed across the roll. The length is the amount we cut off it. A 1m length from a 4m roll gives you a single 4m × 1m rectangle.

Take a side path measuring 0.9m at its widest and 3.8m at its longest. Allowing 5cm at each edge gives a cutting plan of 1m × 3.9m. Here are two ways to cover it without a join.

  • Pile running across the path. Choose 4m width and enter 1m length. The 4m side follows the long edge of the path. You buy 4m² and trim both ends to fit.
  • Pile running along the path. Choose 2m width and enter 3.9m length. You buy 7.8m² and trim the spare width. Hold a sample in each direction to see whether you prefer this view enough to buy the extra 3.8m².

For Carisbrooke 40mm, the 4m × 1m cut costs £85.34 and the 2m × 3.9m cut costs £166.42. Both prices include VAT. Check delivery for your postcode to get the full order cost.

If your finished strip measures exactly 1m × 4m, a 4m × 1m cut leaves no trimming margin. Adding length to that cut gives you more than 1m across the strip, but the roll still spans only 4m along it. Check the edges at several points before committing to a size.

Considering mixed grass offcuts for the same path? Ordering 4m² specifies a total area. If one continuous strip matters, ask us to check the minimum piece width and length before buying.

Start with the shape, then the roll

Draw the perimeter and measure the longest and widest points. Mark recesses, curves, trees and any edges that are not square. Keep the measurements in metres and plan a trimming allowance before settling on your order dimensions. A nominally 2m-wide space may need a wider cut if the actual width or allowance exceeds 2m.

The current range table shows each product’s available widths and maximum cut length. Our featured 2m and 4m options let you compare how much grass each layout needs; the maximum listed length is subject to availability.

These examples assume the stated final dimensions; they are not an instruction to order without an allowance. A change of orientation may produce a different cut plan. Compare both layouts, checking the dimensions, joins and viewing direction together.

For a current price comparison, a 2m × 6m cut of Carisbrooke 40mm is £256.03 including VAT. A 4m × 6m cut is £512.06. Delivery is additional in both cases. The narrower cut halves the supplied area in this example, provided it fits your measured space and allowance.

What should I order for a 3m × 5m garden?

Start with a 15m² finished lawn. For this example, plan to cover 3.1m × 5.1m before final trimming, allowing 10cm extra overall in each direction. That would leave 5cm at each opposite edge if centred. This is an illustration, so check that the allowance suits your actual boundaries and installation plan.

Prices above use Carisbrooke 40mm at its current standard supply price, with VAT calculated by the shop. Identical cuts are priced together at quantity two, as in the basket. Delivery, joining materials, preparation and fitting are additional. Rounded per-m² display prices may give a slightly different total if multiplied by hand.

Turning the entire layout means the 4m and 2m widths span the garden’s 5m side together. Both pieces run 3.1m across its 3m side and keep the same pile direction as each other. This buys 1.8m² less grass, but adds a join and changes the direction you see the pile from. The supplied area outside the final 15m² lawn is 5.4m² for the first two plans and 3.6m² for the turned plan, including trimming allowances.

The current grass saving for the turned layout is £38.40 including VAT. Compare that saving with the joining materials and work needed before deciding. Buying two narrow cuts in the original direction supplies the same area as the wide cut and still needs a join.

How much extra grass should I allow?

Measure several points along each edge and use the largest dimensions. Check diagonals and recesses on your sketch, then allow enough material to trim each boundary. A fixed percentage of lawn area cannot tell you whether a particular rectangle fits. If a measured width is already 2m or 4m, adding any width allowance may change the cut plan.

A strip trimmed off one edge can only fill another area if its dimensions and pile direction work there. Mixed offcuts sold by area cannot be relied on to complete a matching lawn without checking the available pieces first.

Plan joins and pile direction together

Draw an arrow on each planned piece to show the pile direction. Keep joined sections facing the same way: rotating a leftover piece just to fill a gap can change how it looks. A wider cut can remove a join, but it may also leave more material to trim. Compare the complete plan before deciding which trade-off suits your garden.

Joining materials, edge fixings and base preparation need their own plan. Ask us to confirm suitable accessories and quantities; do not assume that any tape or adhesive will suit the backing and installation conditions.

Turn your drawing into an order

On the product page, select the roll width and enter the cut length. Add each separate cut individually, then check every basket dimension against your drawing. The price covers the whole supplied rectangle. See the cost guide for worked prices including VAT and local delivery.

For an irregular layout, send us your measurements before ordering. Once the grass arrives, check the range, dimensions and condition before cutting or installation. Keep the plan with your order details so each supplied cut can be matched to its intended position.
